BAMIT Construction – Natural Gas Line Backfill

PROJECT OVERVIEW

In 2023, Geofoam America supplied 600 cubic yards of Geofoam for use as engineered backfill in a natural gas line installation project in Ketchikan, Alaska.

Utility installations in remote and environmentally challenging regions require materials capable of delivering performance under variable soil, moisture, and climate conditions.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Volume: 600 Cubic Yards Supplied
  • Application: Natural Gas Line Backfill
  • Location: Ketchikan, Alaska
  • Completion:  2023

THE CHALLENGE

Ketchikan’s terrain and climate present unique construction considerations, including moisture exposure, freeze-thaw cycles, and load management over buried infrastructure. Traditional soil backfill can introduce unnecessary weight and increase long-term settlement risks over gas lines. Geofoam was used as lightweight engineered backfill to reduce vertical loading over the natural gas line, improve settlement control, and provide predictable long-term performance. Its lightweight properties made handling and placement more efficient in a logistically complex environment.

THE BENEFITS

  • Reduced load over the buried gas line
  • Improved settlement control
  • Efficient installation
  • Long-term dimensional stability
